Children’s Place

History
In 2003, Family Service of Waukesha opened Children’s Place, a counseling center for traumatized children, ages 3-13. This important program was made possible through the gracious support of the following foundations: the Greater Milwaukee Foundation, the Faye McBeath Foundation, the Elizabeth A. Brinn Foundation, the Miller Brewing Company Employee Fund, the Roundy’s Foundation, the Stackner Family Foundation, and United Way of Waukesha County.

Program Goal
Children’s Place provides a model of integrative mental health care for children ages three through thirteen. The target population is children who have been traumatized, be it physically, emotionally or sexually. We believe that no other agency in Waukesha County is currently meeting the comprehensive treatment needs of this specific group of children. Children’s Place provides an all-encompassing model of mental health treatment to this under-served population of children “in harm’s way”.

Services
The emphasis is on family focused, strength‑based services that are designed to empower children and their families. Specifically, Children's Place provides comprehensive services including, but not limited to, individual, family and group psychotherapy, play therapy, comprehensive assessment and referral services, consultation to other community organizations that serve children, parent education, and training for community organizations, school personnel, day care providers, health care workers and law enforcement personnel to ensure an appropriate and effective community response in dealing with traumatized children.

Referral Sources
Referrals are made by schools, courts, Waukesha County Department of Health and Human Services, attorneys, clergy, police, social service agencies and the medical profession.
