PROGRAMS & SERVICES
Parents Plus
History
Parents Plus is a
volunteer parent mentoring program that began in 1997 through a contract with
Waukesha County Department of Health and Human Services. Many multi-problem
families are in danger of having their children removed from the home, by
order of the court, because of the parent's inability to effectively parent
their children. The parents are in need of support, education, and
community services in order to improve their ability to parent, and to
foster trength and independence.
Program Goal
The goal of the
Parents Plus program is to prevent out of home placement of children by
promoting the strength, effectiveness, self-sufficiency and independence of
families.
Services
Volunteer parent
mentors provide:
· Support, encouragement, and
example for parents and their children
· Assistance to families in the
use of appropriate community resources, services and activities.
· Parenting information and
education, and the development of parenting and survival skills.
· Enhancing the self-care and
personal development of parents.
· Crisis intervention.
Method
of Delivery
Volunteer mentors
are matched with participants according to age, interests, strengths, life
experience, and community of residence in order to promote a positive
experience for the participant and for the volunteer. Specific family goals
for the mentoring relationship are developed by the parents, volunteer
mentor and referring social worker.
Referral Source
Parents who want to
participate in the Parents Plus program must be referred by a social worker
from the Waukesha County Department of Health and Human Services. The
referring social worker is the service coordinator.
